Looking Back

It's all burned down, everything's gone
Right down to the last little memory
I can't conjure it in my mind, that light that shone
All those times we laughed so happily

I like to think we had something special once
And that we simply realised it too late
We never really gave one another that chance
To share our dreams or choose our fate

It's like they never existed, those things that we shared
Like a movie reel that's been overwritten
But I know that there was a time we both cared
Even if we have somehow forgotten

But to dwell on such things is folly they cry
And you will achieve nothing by thinking of it
So I just shake my head and smile and sigh
And think of that fire we never lit
